COUNTER x CULTURE is a new concept, launched by Portuguese Drum & Bass label – Counterpoint Recordings. The main goal is to make a cultural and educational statement that is seamlessly integrated with all the key activities from the brand – from events, to studio mixes, to releases, and even workshops and seminars.
With the launch of the “COUNTER x CULTURE” release series, we aim to make a statement for the sound that the brand stands for, and at the same time to give a worldwide perspective of some of the best underground talent that we had the pleasure to connect with. In this first edition, we make a Trans-Atlantic bridge, bringing two artists from Portugal, and two artists from America together in one release.
The EP kicks off things with “FORMULATE”, written and produced by American talent – Reen. The intro starts of with a mixture of white noises and a series of techy “clunk” sounds that build up to powerful roller that stands out for the way the hard percussion works with the bouncing bass stabs.
Following up on the side B, is the track “FEELINGS” by Portuguese artist Razat. This one brings forth all the Jazz, funk, and musicality we feel the label was lacking a little bit. It makes its way into the EP for its outstanding creative quality, and the statement it makes for creative freedom.
Bringing things back over to the North-American side, Seattle based producer Czekki bringing us “DON’T GET WISE”. This carefully crafted piece of music uses of travelling melodic pads to make you travel, and set the mood for the crispy hi-hats and a gritty kick drum. The track then drops into dirty roller with a growling mid-range synth that will make it impossible not to move your body.
To close things off, Blueshift returns to the label to bring some darkness to this EP, with his latest work – “MATERIA”. Making use of his characteristic “high-tech” drums, travelling mid-ranges and modulated bass lines the artist takes us on a deep and dark journey, which is only enlightened by the soft pads, and a Asian influenced lead sound.
